What is AI Overviews?

Definition

AI Overviews are the AI-generated answer boxes Google shows above traditional results for many searches. They summarise the answer from several sources and link to the pages they drew from — appearing in one is the new "position zero".

Google generates these summaries with Gemini models, grounding them in pages from its regular index. That means classic SEO is the entry ticket: if you don't rank in roughly the top 20 results for a topic, you're rarely eligible to be a source. From there, extractable structure — direct answers, lists, tables, FAQs — decides whether Google lifts your content into the overview.

AI Overviews reduce clicks for purely informational queries, but the links inside them carry outsized trust. For commercial queries ("best web design agency in Delhi"), being named or linked in the overview is effectively a Google recommendation.

Example

Searching "how long does local SEO take" may show an AI Overview saying "most businesses see movement in 3–6 months" with three cited sources. A page whose first paragraph states exactly that — with a timeline table below — is a prime grounding candidate.

Why it matters

Overviews now appear on a large share of informational searches in India and globally. If your content is the source, you capture attention before any competitor's listing is even visible.

You can block Google-Extended (used for model training) without affecting search, but content shown in AI Overviews comes via normal Google indexing — opting out of that means leaving search entirely. For most businesses, the right move is to optimise for inclusion, not opt out.
