What is CRO?

Conversion Rate Optimization

Definition

Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) is the systematic practice of increasing the percentage of visitors who take action — enquire, book, buy — by improving your pages: clearer messaging, stronger proof, faster loads, and less friction. Moving a page from 2% to 3% conversion is 50% more leads from the same traffic.

CRO starts with diagnosis, not redesign: analytics and session recordings show where visitors hesitate or leave. The highest-leverage fixes are usually unglamorous — a headline that states the outcome, one obvious CTA, trust signals near the form (reviews, results, guarantees), fewer form fields, and sub-2-second loads on mobile.

Proper CRO is measured, ideally A/B tested; at lower traffic, sequential testing with clear baselines works. Its economics are why it belongs beside every ad campaign: doubling conversion rate halves your CPL across every channel simultaneously.

Example

A landing page converting 1.8% moves the form above the fold, cuts fields from 9 to 4, adds two client results next to the button and compresses images. Conversion reaches 3.4% — ad spend unchanged, leads nearly doubled.

Why it matters

Traffic keeps getting more expensive; conversion improvements are permanent and multiply every channel — SEO, ads, referral, AI citations — at once.

For lead-gen in most industries, 2–5% is typical, well-optimised pages reach 8–12%, and tightly matched ad-to-page funnels can go higher. Your baseline and trend matter more than global averages.
