What is llms.txt?

Definition

llms.txt is a plain-text file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt that gives AI systems a curated, machine-readable summary of your site — who you are, what you offer, and links to your most important pages. Think of it as a sitemap written for language models instead of crawlers.

The convention (from llmstxt.org) uses simple Markdown: a heading, a short description, then grouped lists of links with one-line summaries. Because LLMs work with limited context, a good llms.txt front-loads what matters: services, proof (case studies with numbers), best answer-first articles, and tools.

It complements — not replaces — robots.txt and sitemap.xml. robots.txt says what crawlers may fetch, sitemap.xml lists every URL, and llms.txt says "here's what actually matters and why".

Example

An AI agent researching "digital marketing agencies in India that publish real case studies" fetches llms.txt files. A file listing "Guduchi Ayurveda — CPL cut 64%, 1,500+ leads in month one" gives the model a concrete, citable claim tied to a URL it can verify.

Why it matters

It's a low-effort, zero-risk way to control the summary AI systems see first — instead of letting them assemble your story from whatever pages they happen to crawl.

Adoption is growing — several AI crawlers and agent frameworks fetch it, and it costs nothing to serve. Even where it isn't fetched automatically, it's a ready-made brand summary for any agent pointed at your domain.
