What is Performance Max?

PMax

Definition

Performance Max (PMax) is Google's automated campaign type that runs your ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps and Discover from a single campaign. You supply assets (text, images, video) and conversion goals; Google's AI decides where and to whom your ads show.

PMax trades control for reach: you can't pick keywords or placements directly, so its results depend entirely on what you feed it — accurate conversion tracking, high-quality creative assets, audience signals, and exclusions (negative keywords, brand exclusions) to stop it claiming easy conversions you'd get anyway.

Run well, PMax finds converting audiences Search alone misses. Run carelessly, it burns budget on low-quality placements and cannibalises your brand traffic while reporting itself a hero. Weekly asset-group and search-theme hygiene is non-negotiable.

Example

A D2C store gives PMax product feeds, real purchase tracking and new-customer goals. It scales to 3× ROAS. The same campaign with weak tracking would optimise toward "conversions" that were actually returning customers who'd have bought anyway.

Why it matters

PMax is where Google is pushing all advertisers. Knowing how to constrain and feed it is now a core paid-media skill — it's the difference between automation working for you or on you.

Usually both: Search captures high-intent queries you control; PMax expands reach around it. Start with Search until conversion tracking is solid, then add PMax with brand exclusions so they don't overlap.
