Definition
Landing page conversion rate is the share of visitors who take the action the page was built for — an enquiry, a booking, a purchase. Conversions divided by visitors. It is the highest-leverage number in paid marketing because it changes cost per lead without changing what you pay for traffic.
The formula
Conversion rate = Conversions ÷ Visitors × 100
Measure it per traffic source. A page converting at 6% overall might be at 12% from branded search and 1.5% from cold prospecting — and the blended figure hides which half is broken.
A worked example
What a two-point improvement is actually worth
- 1A page takes 5,000 visits a month from ads at ₹60 per click: ₹3,00,000 of media.
- 2At 2.5% conversion it produces 125 leads, so cost per lead is ₹2,400.
- 3Improving the page to 4.5% produces 225 leads from the same traffic.
- 4Cost per lead falls to ₹1,333.
The same ₹3,00,000 now buys 100 more leads. To achieve that through bidding alone, the account would have needed a 44% cut in cost per click — which no amount of optimisation delivers.
How to move the number
Match the page to the promise in the ad
The single biggest cause of a weak conversion rate is a mismatch between what the ad said and what the page shows. Every click arrives with an expectation; the page has about three seconds to confirm it.
Reduce the form, then reduce it again
Every additional field costs completions. Ask for what you genuinely need to have the first conversation and collect the rest later, on the call.
Put proof where the doubt is
Reviews, named clients, numbers and guarantees work hardest immediately before the ask, not in a testimonial section at the bottom that most visitors never reach.
Make the mobile experience the primary one
Most Indian paid traffic is mobile. If the form needs pinching, the phone number is not tappable or the page takes four seconds to load, the desktop conversion rate is irrelevant.
Where people get this wrong
- Sending paid traffic to the homepage, which is built to serve everyone and therefore converts nobody particularly well.
- Testing button colours before testing the offer, the headline and the form length — the things that actually move the number.
- Calling a test conclusive on a few dozen conversions, when the difference is well inside normal variance.
- Optimising for form fills without checking lead quality, which is how a page ends up producing twice as many worthless enquiries.
Landing Page Conversion Calculator — questions we get
What is a good landing page conversion rate?
For lead generation, 2-6% is normal and anything above 8% is strong. But intent matters more than the number: a page taking high-intent branded search should convert several times better than one taking cold prospecting, and comparing them is meaningless.
How much traffic do I need to test reliably?
Enough for a few hundred conversions per variant, not a few hundred visits. Most small-business A/B tests are called far too early, on differences that are pure noise.
Should each ad campaign have its own landing page?
Where the intent genuinely differs, yes. One page per service or offer usually pays for itself quickly. One page per keyword rarely does, and creates thin pages that hurt you organically.
Does page speed really affect conversion?
Yes, and sharply on mobile. Every additional second before the page becomes usable loses a measurable share of visitors before they see anything at all — and you have already paid for those clicks.
