Generative Engine Optimization: the playbook for getting named by AI

The short answer

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business the source an AI answer names and links. It is not a new discipline bolted onto SEO — it is the same authority work, pointed at a different surface: extractable answers (a direct answer in the first 60 words, tables, definitions, FAQs), entity clarity (consistent name, address, services and profiles so a model knows who you are), and corroboration (third-party mentions, reviews and citations that confirm your claims). With AI Overviews now appearing on roughly 47–64% of queries in 2026, and citation patterns favouring sources with consistent topical authority, GEO is where the compounding is — and in India the competition for it is still thin.

On this page

The first time a client told me they had found us through ChatGPT, I asked how. They had typed something close to 'best Google Ads agency in Delhi that works with clinics', got four names, and looked up two. We were one of the four. No click from a search result, no ad, no ranking — a recommendation. That is the whole shift in one anecdote: buyers are increasingly asking for an answer rather than a list, and the businesses named in the answer get the consideration. This piece is the playbook we run for that, with nothing mystical in it.

What GEO actually is (and what it isn't)

Strip the acronym away and GEO is three jobs. Make your content easy for a model to extract a correct answer from. Make it unambiguous who you are, where you operate and what you do. And make sure other credible places on the internet say the same thing about you. Nothing there contradicts good SEO — it sharpens it.

What GEO is not: stuffing 'best agency in India' into pages, publishing thin content at volume because AI reads fast, or buying a tool that promises to 'submit' you to language models. There is no submission. Models are trained and grounded on the web as it is, and they retrieve from search indexes at answer time. You earn your place the slow way — which is exactly why it holds.

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

The practice of structuring content, entity signals and third-party corroboration so that generative search surfaces — AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot — accurately represent and cite your business when answering questions in your category.

47–64%

Share of queries showing AI Overviews in 2026, up from 25–30% when they launched in 2024 — per industry tracking studies.

How an AI answer chooses its sources

Different systems work differently, but the practical pattern is consistent. The system decodes intent, retrieves a set of candidate pages, extracts passages that directly answer the question, and synthesises — citing the sources whose passages it leaned on. Two things follow. First, the passage is the unit of competition, not the page: a page that ranks well but buries its answer in paragraph nine loses to a page that answers in the first three lines. Second, consistency beats novelty: sources that demonstrate steady topical authority earn more stable citation placement than one-off pieces that happen to match.

This is why the same handful of domains keep appearing across a category's AI answers. They are not gaming anything. They have the clearest answers, in the most consistent voice, on the most complete set of questions — so retrieval keeps finding them and synthesis keeps trusting them.

The retrieval-to-citation path, simplified

  1. 1Intent parsed — the question is rewritten into one or several searchable queries.
  2. 2Candidates retrieved — pages are pulled from a search index, so classic discoverability still gates everything.
  3. 3Passages extracted — the model looks for a self-contained span that answers the question without needing the rest of the page.
  4. 4Answer synthesised — claims are merged, and the sources whose passages carried the load get named and linked.
  5. 5Trust weighted — corroboration across independent sources decides which competing claim survives.

Write for extraction: the first 60 words decide

Every page that should win an answer needs a self-contained answer near the top — two to three sentences that would stand alone if lifted out, stating the specific, checkable thing a reader wanted to know. Not a promise that the answer is coming, not a paragraph of context. The answer.

Then layer the formats that extract cleanly: a table where numbers are compared, a definition where a term is introduced, a short ordered list where a process is described, and an FAQ block that answers the questions people actually ask in their own words. On this site every post carries a 'short answer' block for exactly this reason — it is the passage most likely to be quoted, so it is written to be quotable.

The lift-out test

Copy your opening answer into a blank document. Does it still make sense and stay accurate with zero surrounding context? If it needs the page around it, an AI answer cannot use it safely — rewrite until it stands alone.

Entity clarity: make it obvious who you are

Models need to resolve you to an entity before they can recommend you. That means one canonical name used everywhere, one address and phone number that match across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles, and an explicit statement of what you do, for whom, where. Contradictions are expensive: two different phone numbers across profiles does not make you look flexible, it makes you look uncertain.

Structured data does the same job in machine-readable form — Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList — and `sameAs` links that tie your site to your verified profiles. None of it is magic. It removes the ambiguity that makes a cautious system pick someone else.

The entity checklist

  • One legal name, one display name, used identically on the site, GBP, LinkedIn and every directory.
  • NAP consistency — name, address, phone identical everywhere, including suite numbers and spellings.
  • Organization + LocalBusiness schema with `sameAs` pointing at your verified profiles.
  • An about page that states the facts plainly — founded when, based where, serving whom, with what credentials.
  • Named authors with real credentials on every article, linked to their own profiles.

Corroboration: what other people say about you

The hardest part of GEO cannot be done on your own website. When a model weighs whether to recommend you, independent confirmation carries more weight than your own claims. Reviews with substance, mentions in industry publications, case studies your clients will put their name to, partner directory listings, and a consistent presence wherever your category is discussed.

For Indian service businesses the highest-leverage corroboration is usually the most ordinary: a Google Business Profile with a steady stream of detailed reviews, a handful of named client case studies with real numbers, and verified partner badges. Those three do more than a hundred guest posts.

Consistency > volume

In 2026 citation studies, sources with stable topical authority earn more reliable placement than sources publishing more but ranging wider.

How to measure GEO without fooling yourself

You cannot open a dashboard and read your GEO rank, because there isn't one. What you can do is measure the things that actually move: a monthly manual audit of 20–30 real buying questions in your category across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and Perplexity, recording whether you are named, what is said about you, and who is named instead. Tedious, honest, and far more useful than a score.

Alongside that, watch referral traffic from AI assistants in analytics, the share of your organic clicks arriving on answer-shaped pages, and — the one that matters commercially — how often new enquiries say they found you through an AI tool. Add that as an option on your enquiry form. Most businesses have no idea because they never asked.

Key takeaways

  • GEO is three jobs, not a new channel: answer extractably, make your entity unambiguous, and get independent sources to corroborate you.
  • The passage is the unit of competition — a self-contained answer in the first 60 words beats a better page that buries its answer.
  • Measure it honestly with a monthly manual citation audit plus a 'found us via AI' option on your enquiry form; there is no real GEO rank to report.

Frequently asked questions

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your content, entity signals and third-party corroboration so generative search surfaces — AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity — accurately describe and cite your business when they answer questions in your category. It overlaps heavily with good SEO but optimises for being quoted in an answer rather than ranked in a list.

Is GEO different from SEO?

It is a shift of emphasis rather than a separate discipline. Classic SEO still gates everything, because AI answers retrieve from search indexes. GEO adds three emphases: writing self-contained answers a model can lift safely, making your entity unambiguous across the web, and earning independent corroboration of your claims.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?

Not for the organic citation. There is no submission process and no paid placement in an AI answer's sources — anyone selling that is selling nothing. Some surfaces carry separate advertising, but the cited sources are earned through retrieval and trust, which is why the work compounds instead of stopping when you stop paying.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Answer-shaped content changes can be picked up within weeks because retrieval refreshes constantly. Entity and corroboration work — consistent profiles, reviews, named case studies, third-party mentions — moves over a quarter or two. It behaves like authority building, not like switching on ads.

Does GEO matter for a small local business in India?

Often more than for a large brand, because local categories are where AI answers are thinnest and the competition has done least. A clinic, hall, dealer or consultancy with a clean Google Business Profile, detailed reviews and a handful of genuinely useful answer pages can become the named recommendation in its area far faster than it could rank nationally for a head term.
